THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (February 15) in the year 1848, the following notice appeared in the "Boston Evening Transcript": ------------------------------------ DAGUERREOTYPES. Notwithstanding the progress that has been made in the art of daguerreotyping, good specimens are still rare. Some of the best that we have ever seen have been recently taken by Southworth & Hawes, 5 1/2 Tremont Row. Among them are portraits of Gen Taylor, Seguin, the vocalist, and "our" Biscaccianti, besides several groups of figures, taken in a style, which is just now quite the rage. The portraits of Seguin and Biscaccianti have been transferred to stone, and the likeness in both instances has been admirably retained in the lithograph. The engravings are published by Messrs Southworth & Hawes, and may be had at the music stores. They are excellent both as specimens of what lithography and the Daguerreotype can do. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 02-15-96
