The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (March 21) in the year 1856, the following humorous item appeared in "The Semi-Weekly Post, General and Commercial Advertiser" (St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada): - - - - - - - - - - "SMART--A countryman entered a daguerreotype saloon a few days since, and wished a daguerreotype of his uncle. 'I can do it, sir, but where is he?' 'Oh, he's dead!' was the simple reply, 'but I've got a description of him in an old pass port.'" With thanks to Dennis Gannon for today's item. -------------------------------------------------------------- 03-21-99
