THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (May 25) the following two items appeared in their respective publications: - - - - - - - - - - - - (following on the heels of yesterday's post. . .) in the 1844 issue of "The Portland Transcript" (Vol 7, No. 7): DAGUERREOTYPE. "As to Daguerreotype." Says a late writer, "a woman's heart is the only true plate for man's likeness. An instant may give the impression, and an age of sorrow and change cannot efface it." This is, perhaps very true. But if you have no living plate on which you desire to impress your features, you cannot do better than to give Mr. Ormsbee a call, at his rooms over the store of Mr. J.D. Kidder, and in a few seconds he will furnish you with your second self, done up in a neat frame, at a trifling cost. Mr. O.'s method combines the latest discoveries in this wonderful art. The likenesses stand out bold and clear, without that misty indistinctness that usually characterizes Daguerreotype impressions. A visit to his "Picture Gallery," always open, will well repay one his time and trouble. - - - - - - - - - - - - - in the 1841 "Boston Daily Evening Transcript: D A G U E R R E ' S D I O R A M A S, FROM PARIS - AT CONCERT HALL. _______________ Notice to the Public M.M.MAFFEY & LONATI, while returning their thanks for the liberal patronage bestowed upon their Exhibition, respectful- ly inform the Connoisseurs of the Fine Arts, that they will re- main but a very short period in this city, previous to the clos- ing and removal of the Wonderful Dioramas!
