THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (July 18) in the year 1846, the following text appeared in the "Daily Republican" (Springfield, Mass. Vol. 3, No. 95; Whole No. 709) page 2: - - - - - - - - DAGUERREOTYPES BY MAIL.--It may be well to remind young gentlemen who send their daguerreotype likenesses by mail to their sweethearts and friends, not to omit paying the postage. There is quite a gallery of these upaid resemblances at the dead letter office at Washington, each charged about two dollars, unreclaimed. A young lady who will not pay two dollars for the likeness of her sweetheart, and a young gentleman who would send a daguerreotype to her unpaid, were never destined for each other. -------------------------------------------------------------- 07-18-97
