THE DAGUERREOTYPE: AN ARCHIVE OF SOURCE TEXTS, GRAPHICS, AND EPHEMERA

The research archive of Gary W. Ewer regarding the history of the daguerreotype

On this day (October 12) in the year 1852, the following two advertisements appeared in "The Republic" (Washington, D. C.; Vol IV. No. 103): ---------------------------------------------------------------- KOSSUTH'S DAGUERREOTYPE. THE ADVERTISEMENT in the Baltimore Sun of the 15th, and the New York Times of the 16th instant, by Whitehurst, claiming the credit to having taken the likeness of this distinguished in- dividual, is not true. The only Daguerreotype which has been taken in America of Governor Kossuth, was taken in his rooms at Brown's Hotel, by Bennett, and the only original picture in this city may be seen at his Gallery, near Seventh street. All others are copies. Daguerreotypes of Madame Pulszky and other distinguished individuals are also on exhibition at BENNETT'S National Gallery. Jan 25 Pa. avenue. near 7th street. [There is, however, an extant daguerreotype of Kossuth, taken by Southworth and Hawes of Boston. --G.E.] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WHITEHURST'S GALLERY OF PREMIUM DAGUERREOTYPES, over the Store of DUVALL & BRO., between 4 1/2 and 6th streets, Pennsylvania avenue. This establishment possesses many advantages over others in the city, being built expressly for Daguerrean purposes. It contains one of the finest skylights in this country, and best arranged; for which reason artists prefer Daguerreotypes taken at this establishment above all others. There are now on exhibition some of the largest Daguerreotypes in the world, taken at this estab- lishment, with a large collection of others, free to the public at all hours of the day. Awarded the first medal at the late Fair of the Maryland Institute, in 1850 and 1851, and a pre- mium at the Great Exhibition at Castle Garden.
